Lingaa is an upcoming Tamil action thriller film being directed by K. S. Ravikumar, who also scripted the film in collaboration with the film's dialgoue writer, Pon Kumaran. The film stars Rajinikanth plays dual role, Jagapati Babu, Anushka Shetty and Sonakshi Sinha in the lead roles. Music is being composed by A. R. Rahman while cinematography is being headed by R. Rathnavelu. Principal photography commenced on 1 May 2014 in Mysore; majority of the filming took place in Ramoji Film City. The climax portions were canned in Shimoga.

In August 2014, the makers of the film confirmed the film's release date as 12 December 2014 that coincides with Rajinikanth's birthday.The motion poster of the film was released on Ganesh Chaturthi , which fell on 29 August 2014. The motion poster received positive response from critics and fans alike and trended on Facebook and Twitter following its release. It reached around 5 million hits on all social networking sites put together in a day. The poster featured Rajinikanth walking in his trademark style in a younger avatar with a temple being shown in the poster's backdrop. The satellite rights of the film were purchased by Jaya TV.
